Real Tuesday Weld, the brainchild of Stephen Coates, first got on my music radar from listening to my beloved fm4 radio show Sunny Side Up. The group is named for the actress of the same name, who is featured in one of my favourite movies The Cincinnati Kid.
Apparently this song got well-known from its inclusion in Season 4 of Nip/Tuck. I have never seen the show before but it is on my "to watch" list. A quick google search also shows that their music was featured on the Gilmore Girls (Oh Lorelei) and Weeds. Instant street cred.
But again it was its fairly regular rotation on this 6am Austrian radio session which eventually led me to hunt down the track and later the video. And tearing through the youtubes you can see a number of very unique videos that the band has released including Black Birdies Come and Last Words (from the Nick and Norah soundtrack). A classically-inspired and instrumented sound provide a 1950's or cabaret-like vibe to the video. The video would not look out of place on a rerun of Twin Peaks or many David Lynch projects.
